Van Oord

The position

As a helmsman or sailor, together with the skipper, you man one of our six motor barges. Together you contribute to beautiful projects throughout the Netherlands and Belgium by providing them with raw materials (sand, clay, gravel). Sometimes with one ship, sometimes with several ships, so you regularly encounter your colleagues on the other ships. 

In this position, you and the skipper are responsible for the ship, the cargo and the safety and well-being of you as a crew. It should be clear that safety and well-being are paramount. You sail from Monday to Friday, you spend the nights onboard during the week.   

You are part of Van Oord Grondstoffen, a smaller organization within Van Oord. The atmosphere is good, the involvement high. Everyone takes responsibility and gets a lot of freedom in return.

• Together with the skipper, you ensure the safe loading, transport and unloading of the cargo, including all nautical actions; 
• Taking care of (preventive) maintenance of the ship, where necessary you call in the technical service; 
• Taking care of the mooring of the ship.

You are an independent colleague with a positive and flexible attitude. You can handle the responsibility and freedom that you get. You don't mind being away from home Monday to Friday. Do you also meet the job requirements below? Then we would like to receive your application! 

• You have experience with (barge) ships in inland shipping; 
• You are in possession of a ‘dienstboekje’ with endorsement ‘Stuurman’ or ‘Matroos’ or Groot Vaarbewijs AB;  
• You have a good command of the Dutch language in word and writing, native or near to native; 
• You are in possession of a B driving license and your own transport; 
• You know your way around a laptop.

• A salary that matches the responsibilities and experience; 
• The possibility to grow into helmsman and/or skipper; 
• 37,5 vacation days, of which a maximum of 7 days can be regarded as collective days off; 
• An attractive travel allowance (€0.31 per km) and a meal allowance of €10 per day; 
• Travel time to the ship above half an hour is considered working time; 
• Overtime is paid with a surcharge of 16.5%;
