Description & Requirements

The position

As a L&D Senior Advisor you are the dedicated expert on L&D topics for several departments within Van Oord. You are a sparring partner for and advise leaders, HR advisors and HRBPs on organizational & development topics. You identify the L&D needs of the organization and anticipate and respond to these needs, by advising the leadership, managers and HR advisors & business partners in an efficient and effective manner about these topics. 

You contribute towards the design and implementation of the L&D annual plan, L&D policies and procedures, curricula and tools, to develop the competences/the talent that the organization needs. 

Additionally, you are responsible for various academy programs with a strong connection to professional, specialized, safety, and technical training. It is a broad role where you are deeply involved in operational aspects while also providing advice at the management level. 

Your responsibilities 

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with your internal stakeholders to identify and understand their needs, gather feedback, and foster a culture of continuous learning. Providing advice, and sharing expertise on learning and development, in order to improve current talent within the organization, so that the competences that the organization needs, can be developed in an efficient manner;
  • Contribute to the design of the annual L&D Plan and departments’ People plan and assesses the L&D needs of the business side by side with the HRBP. To anticipate and advise over these needs in an efficient and effective manner, with appropriate L&D interventions, in close cooperation with the HRBP;
  • Advise on, develop and implement L&D strategies & Training matrices with business units and departments;
  • Design, develop and implement training programs in order to develop the competences and skills needed and develop the talent within the organization; 
  • Design and implement a communication strategy (in partnership with the HR communication advisor) to promote the programs and learning solutions under your scope, across through our existing channels such as intranet and the learning management system; 
  • Academy Catalogue: Maintain, coordinate, evaluate, update and improve our academy catalogue, assuring the internationalization of our offer;
  • Vendor management: Ensure vendor compliance with quality standards, timelines, budgetary requirements, and follow up of contractual processes and negotiations (working alongside the procurement team), vendor reviews and feedback;
  • L&D Budget: Responsible for drafting (parts of) the annual planning, budgeting and monitoring across the year, with the aim of purchasing, developing and implementing the L&D activities according to budget; 
  • Review and approval of invoices related to L&D Programs and VO Academy trainings;
  • Contribute towards the detection, design and implementation of L&D policies, procedures & new tools;
  • Occasionally: conducting workshops/training and high-performance team development sessions;
  • Support the development of junior advisors  and internal development coaches & facilitators through mentorship and guidance;
  • Design and providing training toolkits to enable and empower employees (HRBP/advisor, department team leads, etc.) to lead different team dynamics and trainings internally;
  • Translate HR strategy into programs and trainings, assuring alignment across the company. Designing, developing and managing training curricula, programs and content;
  • Create effective and innovative (f2f/blended/online) learning solutions at all levels of the organization, and support a culture of continuous learning and professional development.


Job requirements

You are an experienced L&D professional with at least 8 year experience, supporting large multinational, commercial and/or project driven, organizations to address their talent, learning and development needs through fit for purpose training.

Furthermore, you have

  • Bachelor's degree, for example, in education or business administration; or equivalent work experience; 
  • Affinity and experience with online learning and learning management systems, facilitation and instructional design;
  • Excellent communication and social skills in the English language, both spoken and written. Dutch is a plus; 
  • Interest in the maritime sector is important, as you will also be involved in safety training and technical education;
  • The ability to influence, bring about change, and take initiatives that lead to impactful results;
  • A team player with persuasiveness, organizational and cultural sensitivity, flexibility and a strong customer focus;
  • Digital mindset and data oriented;
  • Project management skills.
